To enhance interoperability between international partners, a project was initiated at the end of 2019 to define an international invoice model. The goal was to facilitate the global exchange of electronic invoices with public authorities, while accommodating specific local e-invoicing requirements. This project led to the creation of the Peppol International Invoicing Model (PINT).

The Peppol International Invoicing Model (PINT)

Peppol PINT, also known as Peppol International Invoice, is a new specification for electronic invoicing. It acts as an extension of the Peppol BIS 3.0 standard, which is based on the EU e-invoicing standard format. The primary task in creating PINT was to develop a common core to enhance interoperability, while also supporting country-specific stipulations where necessary.

Global Adoption of Peppol PINT

While the adoption of Peppol within the EU was relatively straightforward, the increasing use of Peppol beyond European borders, in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Japan, highlighted the need for specific adaptations. These countries have unique tax requirements compared to the EU, necessitating specific extensions to simplify international document transactions.

Objectives of Peppol PINT

Peppol PINT aims to:

  1. Facilitate the global exchange of electronic invoices and other documents.
  2. Enable automatic processing of electronic invoices.
  3. Support both local and global invoicing requirements.
  4. Adapt to new jurisdictions and regions, ensuring compliance with diverse fiscal specifications.
How Peppol PINT Works

When a company creates an international e-invoice, it must adhere to the business rules of both the sending and receiving countries. For instance, a European company sending an invoice to a non-EU country must comply with the regulations of both countries. Peppol PINT format enables the creation of invoices that meet these dual requirements, facilitating smoother international transactions.

Benefits of Implementing Peppol PINT

Implementing Peppol PINT offers several benefits:

  1. Global Compliance: By adhering to both local and international standards, Peppol PINT enables seamless cross-border transactions.
  2. Efficiency: Automatic processing of e-invoices reduces manual effort and errors.
  3. Security and Transparency: The Peppol network employs rigorous security protocols to ensure data privacy and enhance document traceability.
  4. Business Opportunities: By simplifying the exchange of electronic documents globally, Peppol PINT opens up new business opportunities and facilitates international trade.

In conclusion, Peppol and Peppol PINT represent significant advancements in the realm of electronic document exchange. By promoting interoperability, automation, and compliance, these standards help businesses and governments exchange documents efficiently and securely on a global scale. As more countries adopt these standards, Peppol is set to become the universal framework for electronic transactions, driving global business innovation and growth.
