Bahrain, 25 July, 2024 : The National Bureau for Revenue (NBR) reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing business compliance with VAT and Excise regulations, including the Digital Stamps Scheme. In the first half of 2024, the NBR conducted 814 inspection visits across Bahrain's governorates, aiming to monitor the market, protect consumer rights, and combat VAT and Excise evasion.
These inspections led to 116 reported violations, with administrative fines imposed for non-compliance. Violations included failure to issue proper VAT invoices, not displaying prices inclusive of VAT, and not showing a VAT certificate visibly. Non-compliance with the digital stamp scheme was also noted.
The NBR identified several suspicious cases of VAT or Excise evasion, warning that proven evasion crimes could result in imprisonment for up to five years and fines up to three times the amount of VAT due.
The NBR stressed the importance of cooperation from businesses and consumers for the success of these inspections. It urged parties to report any violations via the NBR call center and the National Suggestions & Complaints System (Tawasul)
