Oman, 20 September, 2024 : The Sultanate of Oman has made significant gains in the United Nations E-Government Index 2024, climbing nine positions to rank 41st out of 193 countries. This improvement from 50th place in 2022 positions Oman as the fifth-ranked nation in the Middle East and North Africa and 12th in Asia.
The UN E-Government Survey, conducted by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, evaluates three main sub-indices: Online Services Index, Telecommunications Infrastructure Index, and Human Capital Index. In the Online Services Index, Oman improved to 48th from 58th in 2022, reflecting advancements in e-government services across various sectors.
Oman also made notable progress in the Human Capital Index, rising 14 spots to 55th, driven by improvements in education levels. The country benefits from robust ICT infrastructure and widespread internet access, placing it among the top 50 nations in the Government AI Readiness Index.
The survey noted that GCC countries have embraced digital transformation as part of their economic diversification strategies, with significant investments in digital infrastructure. Saudi Arabia ranks 6th, the UAE 11th, Bahrain 18th, Qatar 53rd, and Kuwait 66th. The focus on digital cooperation among GCC nations has facilitated regional integration in digital governance.
