Dubai Future Foundation Collaborates with Industry Giants to Enhance Gig Economy Regulations

UAE, 1 November, 2024 : Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) announced a collaboration with Emirates Airline, Amazon, Careem, and GEMS Education under its Gig Economy Sandbox initiative to develop regulatory frameworks that support the gig economy. The initiative, part of the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33) and approved by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aims to adapt Dubai's regulatory environment for future economic needs.

The announcement was made at Emirates Towers, attended by partners and government officials. The Gig Economy Sandbox, alongside the PropTech Sandbox, is part of DFF’s broader Sandbox Dubai platform, which fosters public-private partnerships to shape regulations that encourage innovation and flexibility.

Khalifa AlQama, Executive Director of Sandbox Dubai, emphasized that collaboration with the private sector is essential for crafting future-ready regulations. He noted the Gig Economy Sandbox's focus on industries needing seasonal labor, such as retail, tourism, and logistics, to bolster Dubai's competitiveness.

Leaders from partner companies highlighted the importance of this initiative. Emirates Group’s Oliver Grohmann described the partnership as aligned with D33’s goals of fostering a knowledge-based economy, while Amazon’s Ronaldo Mouchawar cited it as an opportunity to enhance Dubai’s digital economy with flexible working models. Careem’s Andro Valdes and GEMS Education’s Dino Varkey underscored the project’s role in driving innovation and unlocking human capital.

The Gig Economy Sandbox aims to support sustainable economic growth in Dubai by reducing overhead costs for businesses and offering greater flexibility for workers, responding to the global rise in demand for seasonal and freelance employment.
