Oman Launches Competitiveness Index to Drive Balanced Development Across Governorates

Oman, 20 December, 2024 : Oman’s Ministry of Economy has introduced the Competitiveness Index, a new framework designed to evaluate and enhance the performance of all governorates, supporting tailored development and sustainable progress across the nation.

Unlike fostering competition between governorates, the index focuses on driving improvement within each region by leveraging local strengths and addressing specific challenges, aiming for balanced growth nationwide. The index uses 61 sub-indicators across economic, social, and environmental sectors to measure performance in key areas such as infrastructure, government effectiveness, labor market competitiveness, and human capital development.

This data-driven tool will assist policymakers in making informed decisions, identifying developmental gaps, and tailoring strategies to the unique needs of each governorate. By ensuring efficient resource use, the index supports the fair distribution of resources and promotes economic decentralization.

Key objectives include enhancing decision-making, empowering local authorities, tracking progress, and supporting balanced development across regions. The index is expected to improve services, optimize investments, and foster sustainable growth.

With this initiative, Oman aims to strengthen local governance, promote inclusivity, and lead the way in sustainable development planning.
