Bahrain, 25 February, 2025 : The National Bureau for Revenue (NBR) conducted 161 inspection visits across Bahrain’s local markets in January 2025 to ensure compliance with VAT and Excise regulations. The initiative aims to combat tax evasion, protect consumer rights, and promote awareness of proper tax implementation.
The inspections resulted in 35 reported violations, with administrative fines imposed under the law. Violations included failure to issue VAT invoices, not displaying VAT-inclusive prices, absence of VAT certificates in visible locations, and non-compliance with the digital stamp scheme for excise goods.
The NBR has taken legal action against suspected cases of VAT evasion, which may lead to imprisonment of up to five years and fines triple the evaded tax amount.
The bureau urged businesses to adhere to tax regulations and encouraged consumers to report violations via the NBR call center or through the Tawasul system. More details are available on the NBR’s website
