KSA, 25 February, 2025 : Saqer Al-Moqbel, Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the WTO, has been unanimously appointed as the President of the World Trade Organization (WTO) General Council for the 2025–2026 term. This marks a historic achievement, making Al-Moqbel the first Arab and Middle Eastern delegate to hold this prestigious role.
The WTO General Council, the highest decision-making body at the level of heads of missions, oversees the organization’s operations between biennial ministerial conferences. Under Al-Moqbel’s leadership, the council will focus on key issues such as preparations for the 14th Ministerial Conference in Cameroon (March 2026), WTO reforms, fisheries subsidies, food security, and advancing multilateral agreements like the E-Commerce Agreement.
Al-Moqbel’s appointment highlights Saudi Arabia’s growing influence in global trade and its commitment to strengthening multilateral trade cooperation.
