Qatar, Australia Deepen Trade and Investment Links Amid 10.2% Growth

Qatar, 22 April, 2025 : Trade between Qatar and Australia reached A$3.4 billion (QR8 billion) in 2023, marking a 10.2% increase from the previous year and reinforcing Qatar's position as one of Australia’s top three trading partners in the MENA region.

Gonul Serbest, Commissioner for Victoria to Europe, the Middle East, Turkiye, and Africa, highlighted growing collaboration in sectors such as education, health, research, and innovation. While Victoria’s exports to Qatar have traditionally focused on agriculture, diversification is underway, aligned with Qatar’s post-World Cup development plans.

Serbest noted that 2024 marks 15 years of direct flights between Melbourne and Doha, significantly boosting trade, tourism, and cultural exchange. Qatar Airways remains a major partner for Victoria’s sports calendar, supporting events like the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix and MotoGP.

During her visit to Doha, Serbest met with key stakeholders, including the Qatar Foundation, Invest Qatar, and Aspire Academy, to deepen bilateral cooperation. Discussions focused on areas of mutual interest such as sports, climate action, education, technology, and food security.

She also emphasized Victoria’s leadership in education, with ongoing talks between Qatari and Victorian universities to launch joint academic programs in Qatar. Serbest praised Qatar’s urban development and cultural preservation, calling it a model for design excellence.

Sport was highlighted as a strong connector between the nations, with both countries continuing to build on shared ambitions in global sports and grassroots development.
