Oman, 29 August, 2024 : Muscat has improved its standing in the 2024 Smart City Index (SCI), now ranked 88th out of 142 cities, up from 96th last year. The index, developed by the International Institute for Management Development, evaluates cities based on infrastructure and technology perceptions.
Residents of Muscat have highlighted unemployment, affordable housing, and public transport as key areas for improvement. They also emphasized the need for better basic amenities, health services, and security.
The index shows strong resident trust in online information and a willingness to share personal data to alleviate traffic congestion, reflecting growing digital integration. Muscat scored well in health and safety, with positive feedback on sanitation, recycling, public safety, and medical services. Technological aspects, including online maintenance reporting and public Wi-Fi, also received praise.
However, mobility remains a challenge, with issues in traffic congestion and public transport, while technological initiatives like car-sharing apps need development. The city’s green spaces and cultural activities received high marks, with online ticket purchasing for shows and museums enhancing accessibility.
Opportunities for work and education had mixed reviews. While local learning and job services were satisfactory, residents called for better online resources and IT skills training. Governance in Muscat showed moderate scores, with positive feedback on business transparency and public access to city finances, though more public engagement is needed.
