Qatar and Thailand Mark 40 Years of Expanding Partnership Across Trade, Investment, and Culture

Qartar, 17 September, 2024 : Qatar and Thailand have marked four decades of dynamic partnership since establishing diplomatic relations in 1980. Their cooperation spans several key areas, including trade, investment, sustainable development, technology, and cultural exchange.

Thai Ambassador to Qatar, H.E. Sira Swangsilpa, highlighted that bilateral trade reached $3.789 billion in 2023. Thailand’s main exports to Qatar include automobile parts and jewelry, while Qatar exports LNG and crude oil to Thailand. Notably, QatarEnergy's office in Bangkok underscores the growing LNG trade between the two nations.

Swangsilpa also emphasized Thailand’s role in enhancing Qatar’s food security. A recent joint project included a visit by Qatar’s Food Safety Department to Thailand, aiming to align with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the National Food Security Strategy 2024-2030. The visit focused on Thailand’s food safety protocols.

On the investment front, Thai brands like Dusit Thani and Centara are expanding in Doha's hospitality sector. Thai investors are also exploring opportunities in Qatar’s food security, green farming, and wellness sectors. Conversely, Qatari investors are interested in Thailand’s hospitality, renewable energy, and technology sectors.

Cultural exchanges between the two countries are flourishing. Thailand remains a popular destination for Qataris, with over 7,000 tourist visas issued from January to August 2024. Recent events like the “Experience the Thai-ness Trio” at Banyan Tree Hotel Doha showcased Thai culture through food, massage, and Muay Thai.

The Royal Thai Embassy has also introduced an online e-Visa platform for easier travel and highlighted the significant Thai workforce in Qatar, particularly in aviation and hospitality.

In education, Thai students benefit from scholarships in Qatar, with some pursuing higher education at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. The embassy looks forward to increased academic collaboration and more Thai students studying in Qatar.

Overall, the 40-year partnership continues to strengthen, reflecting a commitment to mutual growth and cooperation across various sectors.
