EU and GCC Enter New Strategic Partnership Phase, Says European Commission President

UAE, 17 October, 2024 : President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, emphasized that the European Union (EU) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are entering a new phase of strategic partnership. Speaking at the inaugural summit between the GCC and the EU in Brussels, she highlighted the intertwined security and prosperity of both regions.

Von der Leyen characterized the summit as historic, reflecting mutual recognition as strategic partners in building a shared future. She stressed the importance of security for economic growth and called for diplomatic efforts to strengthen stability in the region.

On environmental sustainability, she noted that both the EU and GCC must prioritize responsible resource use to achieve their sustainable development goals. She reaffirmed their commitment to the green transition and the need for advanced technologies to support clean energy initiatives.

The President also highlighted the significance of the energy partnership, describing it as a catalyst for a new era of collaboration. She pointed out that the Gulf region could become a hub for clean energy, connecting Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Von der Leyen praised the Gulf-European cooperation in trade and investment as the foundation of their partnership and called for stronger links in energy, innovation, and technology, including artificial intelligence, to address common challenges.
