Qatar Municipality Ministry Achieves Major Sustainability and Development Milestones in 2024

Qatar, 20 December, 2024 : Qatar’s Ministry of Municipality has achieved significant progress in 2024, advancing sustainability, food security, and digital transformation in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.

Notable environmental achievements include a 2.3% increase in green space, totaling 18 million square meters. The successful conclusion of the Expo 2023 Doha and the planting of 840,000 trees were part of the 10 Million Trees Initiative, which earned the Best Sustainable Development Initiative award in the Middle East. Additionally, seven new parks were inaugurated, and the world’s longest air-conditioned outdoor pathway was launched at Rawdat Al-Hamama Park.

The Ministry also made strides in waste management and clean energy, generating over 245,000 MWh of electricity from waste and allocating land for recycling industries. Over 40,000 tonnes of compost were produced, and more than 20,000 landfill waste removal permits were issued.

Qatar received global recognition, including the Best Visual Work Award for the Digital Twin Project in Sydney and the UNESCO Learning Cities Award 2024. Doha also won the Shanghai Global Award for Sustainable Development.

In digital transformation, the Ministry launched its 2024-2030 strategy, introduced 100 new electronic services, and initiated the Smart Cities Solutions Project. It also focused on accessibility by accommodating individuals with disabilities in public spaces.

In food security, Qatar’s self-sufficiency in local production improved, with a 100% increase in organic farming. The country also marketed 26 million kg of vegetables and supported 1,237 farms with agricultural machinery programs.
