UAE and Japan Strengthen Cooperation in Food Security and Climate-Smart Agriculture

UAE, 11 July, 2024 :  Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, met with Sakamoto Tetsushi, Japan's Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, to discuss expanding cooperation in food security and advanced climate-smart agriculture. This meeting, part of the UAE-Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Initiative (CSPI), aims to drive sustainable economic growth and enhance bilateral cooperation.

The ministers focused on boosting agricultural and fisheries cooperation under a Memorandum of Understanding between the UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE) and Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. They also explored ways to increase food trade between the two nations.

Al Dahak emphasized the strong UAE-Japan relationship, highlighting their strategic partnership in various fields, especially food security. She noted the potential for deeper cooperation through expertise exchange, increased investments, and modern agricultural practices, including sustainable fish farming.

Al Dahak expressed pleasure in meeting Minister Sakamoto and emphasized their commitment to achieving shared goals in agriculture and fisheries. She highlighted the importance of partnership and cooperation for a sustainable future, inviting her Japanese counterpart to the World Food Security Summit in Abu Dhabi this November. 

The discussion included technology transfer, innovative practices like precision farming and smart greenhouses, and fisheries development through marine conservation and advanced techniques. They also addressed priorities for COP29 in Azerbaijan, focusing on climate change adaptation and finance.

The UAE congratulated Japan on hosting Expo 2025, acknowledging its role in promoting global efforts in food security and climate change. Japan, a key partner in the Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM for Climate) and the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC), continues to collaborate with the UAE on sustainable agricultural initiatives.
