UAE, 17 August, 2024 : The UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology has signed a declaration with BRICS counterparts to establish a Centre for Industrial Competences in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). The announcement was made during the 8th BRICS Industry Ministers Meeting, chaired by Russia under the theme “Strengthening Multilateralism for Equitable Global Development and Security.”
The centre aims to enhance industrial skills and capabilities, promoting partnerships in the New Industrial Revolution (NIR) framework. The initiative focuses on identifying challenges, opportunities, and fostering industrial growth. Omar Al Suwaidi, Undersecretary of the UAE Ministry of Industry, signed the declaration, highlighting the importance of the BRICS collaboration, which represents nearly 45% of the global population and a third of the world’s GDP.
The declaration also outlines the formation of working groups in areas like chemicals, metals, SMEs, smart manufacturing, and clean technology. Emphasizing the commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 9 on industry and infrastructure, the members aim to implement green technologies and advance industrial policies.
The UAE joined BRICS in January 2024, as part of a group expansion. Projections suggest BRICS could represent 45% of the global economy by 2040. The next BRICS Industry Ministers Meeting will be hosted by Brazil in 2025.
