Qatar-Vietnam Trade Grows 44% Over Last Decade, Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Qatar, 27 September, 2024 : Trade between Qatar and Vietnam has surged by 44% in the last 10 years, increasing from QR1.4bn to over QR2bn, according to Vietnamese Ambassador to Qatar, H.E. Nguyen Huy Hiep. Speaking at a press conference, the Ambassador highlighted growing bilateral ties and the expected exchange of high-level delegations in the coming months, which will strengthen cooperation in areas such as energy, labor, culture, and tourism.

Hiep emphasized plans to promote cultural exchange, including a memorandum of understanding on cultural and tourism cooperation during Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s upcoming visit to Qatar. Additionally, events like photo exhibitions and the expansion of scholarship programs for Vietnamese students in Qatar are on the agenda.

The Ambassador praised Qatar’s efforts in addressing climate change, particularly through initiatives like the Global Dryland Alliance and Expo 2023 Doha. He also emphasized Vietnam's appreciation for Qatar’s progress under its National Vision 2030, particularly in clean energy.

Looking ahead, Hiep aims to strengthen bilateral ties in energy, investment, and labor, while exploring new opportunities in green energy, digital transformation, and the Halal industry. Both countries have enjoyed strong relations since establishing diplomatic ties in 1993, with mutual cooperation in international forums and trade ranging between $400m to $500m annually.

Vietnam exports products such as seafood, smartphones, and furniture to Qatar, while Qatar supplies LNG, polymers, and aluminum to Vietnam. Hiep noted Vietnam's potential as a key partner, given its robust economy and participation in 16 free trade agreements (FTAs). The Halal industry and green energy sectors are areas of great potential for future collaboration.
