Qatar Amir Unveils Constitutional Amendments and Economic Growth Plans

Qatar, 16 October, 2024 : Qatar Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani announced on Tuesday that the Cabinet has finalized draft constitutional and legislative amendments, which will be presented for a popular referendum following Shura Council approval. This announcement was made during the inauguration of the Shura Council's fourth ordinary session.

The Amir highlighted the return to the system for appointing Shura Council members and encouraged citizen participation in the upcoming referendum. He also emphasized Qatar's commitment to its environmental goals, noting the launch of the region's first sovereign green financing framework and the issuance of government green bonds.

On local economic matters, the Amir stated that despite expected growth decline, Qatar's economy continued to expand in 2023, with GDP growth of 1.2%. The hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon sectors grew by 1.4% and 1.1%, respectively. The International Monetary Fund forecasts 2% growth for 2024, with inflation dropping to 1.4% by July.

The Amir noted efforts to reduce public debt from nearly 73% of GDP in 2020 to under 44% by the end of 2023, while also supporting the private sector through initiatives from the Qatar Development Bank and a new real estate platform.
